DAY TRIP TO KHEVI PROVINCE
– KAZBEGI REGION
for the year 2004

We will travel towards Mtiuleti and Khevi provinces by one of the
oldest roads in Georgia, named The Georgian Military Highway by the
Russian King Alexander I, to see the high peaks, roaring rivers and
mountain lifestyle of Georgia’s northern borderlands. “Georgian
Military Highway” dates from the first century BC and is still
important as one of the links to Russia through the Caucasus
Mountains.
Tour Schedule:
Our trip will start in the morning (08:00 or 09:00). We drive to
Ananuri and will have a short excursion. Unfortunately, the road has
fallen into disrepair in recent years, however it is the most
picturesque passage that follows the Aragvi River. Then we will pass
through ski resort Gudauri, drive over Jvari Pass or “Cross Pass”
(2379 m) to the town of Kazbegi (1700 m) - center of Khevi province.
If we are lucky with weather we will see Mount Kazbek, soaring to
height of 5047 m. Its white, pristine beauty wrapped in the rays of
the rising sun almost fills the sky. Grand and dignified, it is at
times capricious, even savage. Natives of Khevi often call this
giant volcano looming over their homes “The Bride of Khevi”. Mount
Kazbek is the third highest and one of the best known peaks in the
Caucasus. Stories say that Amiran – Georgian Prometheus, defer of
the gods, was the first to conquer Mkinvartsveri; Georgian
historians refer to “one Ioseb from Khevi”, who during the reign of
King Erekle II (17th – 18th cc.) scaled Mkinvartsveri. Officially
however, the first man to conquer Kazbek was Englishman, - Douglas Freshfield
with guides from the village Gergeti.
On the way back to Tbilisi stop in Phasanauri for dinner. You will
enjoy traditional mountain dish "Khinkali".
Round trip will take 8-9 hours.
Sights of excursion:
-
Ananuri - 16th – 17th cc. fortress
and church. The complex comprises fortification, cult and civic
buildings. Ananuri was a kind of a guardian of North boarders of
Georgia.
-
Darialy gorge
-
Gergety Trinity Church – the most
important altar of 14th century, located on the slope of Mount
Kazbek. The stone decorations represented on the façade of the
church lead us to the ancient rituals and believes.
