DAY TRIP TO KAKHETI – WINE REGION
for the year 2004

We will explore picturesque and the most fertile part of Georgia - Kakheti, which borders the Great Caucasus range from the north Alazani Valley, summits of which are over 3,000 m. This region is known as a birthplace of viticulture and wine- making. The reach land, burning sun and hard work have developed about 500 varieties of vine in Georgia. The history, culture and lifestyle of Georgians are embodied in Georgian wine. It is a symbol of Georgian hospitality, friendship, tolerance and a key to the mystery of Georgian longevity.

Tour Schedule:
Tbilisi - Kakheti - Tbilisi (290 km, round trip). Our tour will start in the morning (08:00 or 09:00). First we will visit town of Signagi - the Royal town, a beautiful example of a cityarchitecture of the 18th c. built by King Heraclius II. After excursions to Gremi fortress (16th – 17th cc.) and Alaverdi Cathedral (11th c.) - symbol of blossoming of the Georgian culture, we will have lunch in local restaurant in Telavi, the centre of Kakheti province. After lunch we will visit Tsinandali wine factory and a museum, ancient princely residence of the poet and public figure, Kakhetian prince of the 18th c. A. Chavchavadze. Center of the intellectual life in the 19th c. Beautiful English park, roses and exotic plants. One of the oldest wine cellars (19th c.) founded by A. Chavchavadze's father. The oldest wine from the cellar collection dates to 1814.
We will be back to Tbilisi around 18:00.
